How to Read a Tincture Label

A tincture label carries more information than most people realise, and once you know what to look for it becomes a quick way to judge quality.

Start with the plant part. Root, leaf, flower and fruiting body behave very differently, and a label that only names the plant is telling you less than it could.

Next, the extraction ratio — often written as 1:3 or 1:5. This describes how much plant material went into how much liquid. It is not a quality score on its own, but it tells you how concentrated the preparation is.

Then the solvent. Alcohol percentage matters because different plant constituents dissolve at different strengths. A resinous plant needs a higher percentage than a delicate flower.

Finally, look for a batch number and a date. They signal that someone is keeping records — and that you can ask questions about the bottle in your hand.

If a label leaves you uncertain, that is a good reason to ask rather than guess. A short conversation is usually faster than an afternoon of reading.
